synopsis

Exploring the motivations that drive someone to relocate their lives to the other side of the globe, The Nail That Sticks Out is a meditation on the role of our surroundings in shaping our identities.  Over twelve minutes, two recent arrivals to London narrate their experiences of moving to the UK.  What emerges is a tension of pushing and pulling forces, with the individual carving out their identity from this liminal space.

The film was shot over two months, primarily in South London, and has two distinct sections, the first focussing on Chisato, and the second on Kohei.   To learn more about these subjects, click the Profiles menu above.
