Symbolic Camera

This is the symbolic camera I created at the beginning of the film making process. Though I hadn't planned specific scenes for the film, at this point I knew it would be filmed in London, and so the outer 'case' is wrapped in paper that shows a map of London.  The body of the camera was formed by an old small cereal box. I filled the box with flour to weigh it down. Just as holding the camera felt heavy, so too did the project feel weighted with responsibility to portray my subjects fairly, particularly since the topic at hand could be weighty.  The lens, a mirror, reflects the intention of the film maker, myself.  The flame at the centre stands for the passion I wanted to be evident in the finished work. Coloured paper was used to represent sexuality. On the back of the camera is a drawing of a bird, symbolising movement and freedom. Not only did the symbolic camera help me to realise my intention, it proves that I am complicit in my work, and so am inseperable from the film I made.
